Guest Post on Modern Luciferianism by Leo

I'd like to thank Leo for submitting this article. This is the first guest post I've hosted on my website. Guest posts provide an excellent opportunity to present the diversity of thought among those who adhere to alternative religious philosophies and who practice the esoteric arts and sciences. The views expressed in this post belong to the author alone and do not necessarily relate to the opinions held by Jeremy Crow or any other guest author presented elsewhere on this site. This is Leo, in his own words:

I don't consider myself a typical "left-hand path" type of person. I most definitely identify with and follow most tenets of Luciferianism, but don't seem to fit the mold of what seems to be a "typical follower." I only base this on what I see on social media, so take this position with a grain of salt. Most Luciferians I see wear lots of black and have a magick altar in their home. They perform rituals that seem more Wiccan than Luciferian. Me? I am an avid sports fan (boxing, NFL), I enjoy computer gaming, I routinely lift weights (to the point of being a "gym bro"), and I listen to a wide variety of music that has no LHP message or aesthetic.

The only symbol I wear is a Sigil of Lucifer pin on my lanyard to work. To date, no one has commented on it and there is no problem with that. The only people I have ever spoken to about Luciferianism are those who are close enough to me that I can be sure of a fair chance to speak and those who have expressed interest in the occult in general. I do feel I'm a "devout Luciferian," I just don't subscribe to the intangible like ritual and spell-work.

Luciferianism in Today's World

by Leo

There is something odd about Left-Hand Path ideologies and philosophies that is unique to them. Specifically, the foundational tenet of self-adulation and the rejection any of principles or practices that don't fit into the practitioner's way of life. What is unique is that this foundational commonality creates a plethora of micro-identities within LHP and even a little bit of animosity among the different "trails along the path". I have always known of and admired Luciferianism since I was young, but never truly dove in until relatively recently. I took my time reading, studying, exploring all the principles, tenets, beliefs, and outlooks of the various groups and ended up here. But in my search I found that even other people on the Left-Hand Path are confused as to what Luciferianism is and isn't, so that seems the best place to start.

As I mentioned, these philosophies are highly personalized and tied deeply to one's core identity, just like any other standard religion would be. The "Circles of Cultural Identity" loosely put are, in order of least importance to greatest: Ideas & Attitudes, Values, and Beliefs. The widest circle, Ideas & Attitudes, are concepts we consciously turn over in our thoughts to determine whether it is something to which we give merit or reject and forget. Ideas & Attitudes, after personal introspection, develop into our Values if we choose to accept them. Likewise, as people practice their Values in daily life, they become ingrained in the fiber of the person's being, thus becoming Beliefs. The same works in reverse, where Beliefs shape a person's perception of the world, thereby influencing the way they analyze Ideas and what Ideas & Attitudes become part of their Values. Personally, there are very few things I would put in my own Belief circle, but what they are will come later.

With the Circles of Cultural Identity in mind, I am reminded of a random social media post I came across, where Jeremy Crow had posted a picture of Wisdom of Eosphoros and someone said they enjoyed the book until it came to a point discussing kindness towards other people. As innocuous as that statement might seem, it made me question what exactly Luciferianism is and how being nice to other people could be perceived as contradictory. Is Luciferianism generosity and courtesy? Is Luciferianism scorn and disdain for others? Is Luciferianism "liberal" or "conservative?" Is Luciferian a sense of superiority and an inflated ego? Is Luciferianism tiered, where those who have found the light stand above anyone else?

To start broadly, Luciferianism is, as its namesake, the path of the "Light Bringer;" wherein Light is knowledge. It is the pursuit of knowledge and experience, attaining wisdom, and understanding the world around us in a lens that is not clouded by personal worldviews. Any left-hand path philosophy is highly tailored to the individual, yes, but the direction of them are typically agnostic of Cultural Identities since the pursuit of knowledge is universal. Foundationally, Luciferians reject the notion of any supreme deity who orchestrates the comings and goings of the universe. Thus, the truest word by which we define the world around us is science. Science, like Luciferianism, is not concrete or bound by any one creed. When a conclusion is reached in modern sciences, it must be confirmed and replicated by peer review to ensure the integrity of the conclusion. To a Luciferian observing the world, science can say that the sky is blue today, but after multiple extensive, confirmed studies it turns out it is actually green. The sky is, therefore, green. The constant we held in our minds that the sky is blue has been proven false. The Luciferian doesn't reject this news because it challenges the word they have used to describe the sky. A Luciferian should welcome the news because, while the finding didn't validate what they always held to be true, it did prove that previously accepted information wasn't in fact true at all.

Another common outlook of the Luciferian is that there is no afterlife. Just like there are no gods, there is no palace in the sky to which we ascend after we die. Simply put: this life, this planet, this existence is all we have. A person has one lifetime to pursue and accomplish whatever they so choose. "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law," as Crowley put it. But a caveat to this that seems to be lost on many is that actions are not free of consequence. A Luciferian absolutely does not have to be nice to anyone if they don't want to. Many people often demonstrate they don't deserve kindness in time. However, consider this tenet of The Satanic Temple: "One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason." So consider this: what does a Luciferian gain from being spiteful to others? What does a Luciferian accomplish by fostering enmity towards themselves and creating enemies of everyone around them? To reiterate: there is no law or decree or rule saying Luciferians must be nice to anyone. But in the line of pragmatism, it would more advantageous to surround oneself with allies instead of enemies.

The above two points can be combined to make several that intersect: This life and world is all we have. There is no magical ghost coming to save us. There is no health resort in the clouds where our late grandparents and pets are waiting for us. Luciferians live by verifiable facts; by the latest proofs of science. Luciferians should laud that which is proven by science. With that in mind, the following outcomes become reasonable:

  1. Being conscious of humanity's adverse effect on the environment and striving to improve it is not a political leaning. Scientists the world over without regard to politics, nationality, or any other lens, agree that human enterprise is harming the planet in very serious ways. That's not a political view, it is a confirmed fact. So what is a Luciferian to do? A Luciferian isn't obligated to do anything. But consider this: if this world is all we have, if this is the only life we get, why wouldn't a Luciferian act? What does the Luciferian gain from allowing, even participating in, the continued destruction of the only planet upon which we can live?

  2. Advocating for fair treatment of all people isn't for "Social Justice Warriors." Scientifically, humans are humans and are all the same. Regional differences are Darwinian adaptations to environment and circumstance. Consider that those peoples who live in nations that are closer to the equator tend to have darker skin. Is it because they're inferior to or a different species from those who have lighter skin? Or is it because areas closer to the equator have more exposure to the sun, thus their skin has more melanin to protect them from sunburns? Whatever socio-economic conditions that contribute to negative behaviors are not relevant to the basal point of being a human. Nationalities are little more than tribal affiliations in the grand scheme of existence. So what is a Luciferian to do? A Luciferian isn't obligated to do anything. But consider this: humans are all scientifically the same. Why wouldn't a Luciferian treat everyone pragmatically? What does a Luciferian gain from treating a person with prejudices based on physical characteristics outside of one's control? Why wouldn't a Luciferian allow a person to demonstrate their character and let that be the determining factor in how to treat that person?

  3. People who advocate for the ethical treatment of animals (not the acronym organization) are not "liberal hippies." Every creature inhabits this one planet. There shouldn't be a need for a scientific demonstration to assert that humans clearly have higher cognitive ability than any other creature on Earth. However, Neural Darwinism confirms that the burgeoning of the forebrain is what makes humans more than just another primate. Dogs, pigs, dolphins, crows, and various apes have all demonstrated elevated cognitive ability superior to that of say a snail or a squirrel. Regardless, the peak of their cognitive function is comparable to adolescent humans at best. There exist few outliers, such as Alex the Grey Parrot, but those are exceptions. So what is a Luciferian to do? A Luciferian isn't obligated to do anything. But consider this: the godhead of humanity makes us the dominant species on Earth. However, humanity has acted in such a way that we have endangered not only ourselves and our planet, but every other life on it. This isn't a call for veganism or vegetarianism. Rather, this is a call for protecting endangered species and for sustainable, responsible enterprise practices. Why shouldn't a Luciferian take responsibility for the other lives with whom we share the world, knowing we are the dominant species on it?

Through a political lens, all of the above seems to lean hard left. Try, however, to view this outside of whatever political tribe you align with. Consider only the scientific foundation with which these points are presented. Think introspectively and ask yourself: do these ideas challenge me because they contradict Luciferianism? Or do I not like these ideas because the cultural sphere in which I was raised disagrees with them, thus I learned to disagree with them? Where, when, how, and by whom you were raised have all influenced your Circles of Cultural Identity. All of those factors have played a part in shaping your worldview to the point that some, maybe even most, of your beliefs and values are inherited and not entirely your own.

Personally, all the points above are things I hold as my values: treating people fairly until they prove undeserving, treating animals with reasonable compassion, and being conscious of my impact on the environment. My only beliefs are to accept the fluidity of life, to learn as much as I can about as much as I can, and in my own ability to influence the world immediately around me with the greatest tools in my collection: the knowledge I've garnered and my life experiences.

To summarize what being a Luciferian means in the modern age: it is simply being responsible for more than just oneself. In the Genesis Myth, Lucifer led humanity to the Tree of Knowledge and urged Eve to eat the fruit. The fruit gave us knowledge. In the Prometheus Myth, the Titan stole the fire of the gods and gives it to humanity. These were the sparks that created the thinking and reasoning human. In both of these myths, the giver of knowledge was given eternal punishment for having given us the spark of knowledge. Honestly, though, I don't believe in fairytales and chances are you don't either. The direction the world is taking is, in some ways, the wrong one. That doesn't mean that it's all a lost cause, however. So what is a Luciferian to do? A Luciferian isn't obligated to do anything. But consider this: knowing that humanity can do better, that you yourself can do better, why shouldn't a Luciferian take action?
